Designing for Health

The book behind Nordic's human-centered approach

Designing for Health: The Human-Centered Approach explores a simple but powerful idea: healthcare works better when it is designed around the people who use it.

Co-authored by Nordic Chief Medical Officer Dr. Craig Joseph, the book challenges healthcare organizations to rethink systems, workflows, and technology through the lens of the patients, clinicians, and staff who rely on them every day.

Why human-centered design matters

Healthcare organizations spend significant time and resources implementing new technologies, refining processes, and driving change. Yet many challenges persist because systems are often designed around requirements, workflows, and technology rather than the people using them.

Designing for Health explores how healthcare leaders can reduce friction, improve experiences, strengthen adoption, and create systems that better support the patients, clinicians, and staff who depend on them every day.

Drawing on decades of clinical and health IT experience, Dr. Joseph shares practical frameworks for understanding how thoughtful design can transform the way healthcare is delivered and experienced.

From philosophy to practice

The principles explored in Designing for Health reflect the same approach Nordic brings to healthcare transformation work every day.

Whether helping organizations optimize EHRs, redesign workflows, improve clinician experience, implement new technologies, or navigate large-scale organizational change,

Nordic starts with a simple question: How can we make it easier for people to do the right thing?

By designing around real-world needs and experiences, healthcare organizations can improve technology adoption, reduce unnecessary complexity, strengthen operational performance, and create better outcomes for both care teams and patients.
