Interview with Becket Mahnke, MD [Podcast]

This episode examines how clinician well-being, patient communication, and digital workflows intersect inside modern healthcare organizations. Through Dr. Becket Mahnke’s experience as a pediatric cardiologist and Chief Medical Information Officer, the conversation highlights why reducing cognitive burden and redesigning care teams requires far more than technology fixes. They explore how expectation‑setting, team‑based workflows, and data‑driven insight can stabilize patient‑portal messaging, strengthen clinician wellness, and create more resilient rural care environments. Ultimately, this episode reveals why digital tools, leadership culture, and operational design must function as a unified system to support both clinicians and the patients they serve.

Beyond burnout scores: The hidden risk in clinician engagement surveys

Every year, health system leaders review clinician engagement and burnout survey results with a familiar mix of hope and resignation. The numbers are rarely great, but they’re often “not terrible,” which can feel like a small win in an environment defined by constant pressure. A few slides later, leadership moves on, comforted by the sense that the organization at least understands where things stand. The problem is that this sense of clarity may be entirely illusory. Increasingly, the clinicians most at risk (those most burned out, most disengaged, most likely to leave) may not be responding at all.

Breaking the cycle: reducing costs in NHS re-procurement

The NHS is under immense pressure to deliver more for less. With budgets stretched and demand rising, procurement has become a frontline issue for sustainability. Yet despite best intentions, repeated re-procurement exercises often inflate costs rather than reduce them. Fragmented approaches, short-term fixes and lack of alignment between clinical, operational and commercial teams can lead to higher outlay and missed opportunities.

Not better slogans. Not more dashboards. Context. The kind of context that captures nuance, environment, and the messy reality of clinical care rather than a sanitized after-action report.
Medical documentation has evolved significantly from its traditional role as a tool for clinical communication and billing. Today, patients’ access to their own medical records enabled by initiatives like OpenNotes and federal mandates has transformed documentation into a shared space between clinicians and patients. This shift emphasizes transparency, trust, and partnership, requiring healthcare professionals to rethink how they write notes to ensure clarity, respect, and inclusivity.

For most healthcare organisations, digital transformation such as a new EPR or a move to the cloud, is now a strategic necessity. Yet the returns often fall short, with one analysis estimating that around 70% of these programmes fail to deliver their intended value. In addition, with the limitations in money, human resources, and skill sets during implementation, many organisations are unable to take full advantage of their digital investments until well after implementation.

Modern healthcare systems face increasing pressure to deliver exceptional patient experiences while managing operational efficiency. Traditional feedback mechanisms, such as post-visit surveys, often fail to capture real-time concerns and actionable insights. This gap has led to the exploration of innovative solutions that prioritize immediacy and simplicity, enabling healthcare providers to respond to patient needs as they arise rather than after the fact.
